The US Open gets underway

The US Open has returned to Flushing Meadows in New York bringing all the action from the Grand Slam tournament.

The opening day did not disappoint with Men’s World No.1 Novak Djokovic up against Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz. The first match for Djokovic, who is looking to defend his 2015 title, was not without a struggle as he required treatment to his arm in the first set, however he went on to win his match 6-3 5-7 6-2 6-1.

After being forced to withdraw from Wimbledon due to a wrist injury Rafael Nadal returned beating Denis Istomin in three straight sets 6-1 6-4 6-2. Brit Kyle Edmund who is currently ranked 84th had a great opening match against France’s Richard Gasquet, currently seeded 15th, winning 6-2 6-2 6-3, making this the best win of his career, he will go on to face American Ernesto Escobedo in round two. There was also more success for the British players as Woman’s Brit No.1 Johanna Konta won her first match 6-3 6-3 against Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Konta has shot up the ranks in the last year, she currently sits at 14th compared to this time last year when she was ranked 97th.

Olympic champion Andy Murray will play his first round match on day two, where he will be up against Czech Lukas Rosol, Murray will be looking to continue his success this year after winning Olympic gold and becoming Wimbledon champion again earlier on in the summer. Laura Robson won in straight sets to qualify for the tournament and will go up against fellow Brit Naomi Broady in her round one match.

The tennis season will finish later on this year with the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
