Australian Open Quarter Finals – Who Made It Through?

Over the weekend, we saw an exciting round of tennis for Brit Johanna Konta. Reaching the last eight in her draw meant she faced Russian’s Ekaterina Makarova with the hopes of going through to the quarter-final.

It has been a brilliant tournament for Konta so far as she made it to the last eight without dropping a single set. Pulling off yet another great performance in her match against Makarova she completed the first set in just 24 minutes winning 6 – 1. It looked like the Brit may be struggling in her second set after errors meant her opponent built a 4 – 1 lead over her. Determined not to give up Konta fought back winning five games in a row and went on to win the set 6 – 4.

Konta, who is seeded ninth in the world, will want to keep up her winning streak of not losing a set as she heads into her quarter-final to face reigning champion Serena Williams. Williams beat Barbora Strycova 7 – 5, 6 – 4 to make it through to the next round and has her sights set on a 23rd Grand Slam title.

When asked about facing Serena Williams, Konta said “She's one of the few players still playing who I watched growing up. As a young girl wanting to be a professional tennis player, it's an incredible honour and I can't wait to play on court with her.”

Don’t miss out on other tennis highlights of the year including Wimbledon and the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
