Robin van Persie announces he will leave Arsenal FC

Robin van Persie has broken the news on his personal website that he will not be renewing his contract at Arsenal.

In news that will devestate Arsenal fans, van Persie has decided that he will not be able to win the silverware he dreams of whilst playing at the Emirates Stadium. Having seen ex team mates like Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy move on to become Premier League champions AND improve their wages at the same time at Manchester City, few people would blame him for making this decision at this important stage of his career. Van Persie is nearly 29 years old, so this is likely to be the most lucrative contract he'll be able to negotiate until he hangs up his boots.

A host of top European clubs will now be chasing Van Persie, who will most likely be available for a reduced fee given that he is entering the last year of his contract with Arsenal. Manchester City are the favourites for his signature, but city rivals Manchester United could also be on the look out to replace Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen, and a player of Van Persie's quality would most certainly fit the bill. A fee of approximately £20 million is being touted as the fee that Arsenal will want, which should be possible given the interest in Van Persie allegedly coming from Spain and Italy as well.

Arsenal fans will be disappointed, but should remind themselves that one player is never bigger than the club. Arsene Wenger has already spent £22 million to bring strikers Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud to the Emirates, and if Wenger does decide to cash in on Robin van Persie, Arsenal will need one or both of these players to hit the ground running in order to keep up with the Manchester clubs. Both are proven at international level and scored over 20 goals each last season in their respective leagues, so look to be wise purchases.

With or without the talismanic Dutchman, Arsenal hospitality fans will be hopeful that Arsenal can still challenge for the Premier League title with these key additions, along with the further development of other key players such as Gervinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and the long-awaited return of Jack Wilshere.
