Mike Tindall talks Twickenham, Autumn Rugby & Bear Grylls

Views

Get to know our brand ambassador Mike Tindall as he talks Southern Hemisphere, Twickenham, England Rugby and Bear Grylls in our exclusive Q&A.

If you could go back and relive one career highlight as a player, what would it be and why?

That’s a very tough question as I was very fortunate to have a lot of highlights through my career but I think aside from my first cap and the RWC final, the 2nd test against South Africa in 2000 would be my favourite as I think it was that game that changed the belief in that team and kick started us on to bigger things.

Best coach you’ve played under?

I have been lucky to work with many great coaches but Dean Ryan always stands out for me.

Who is the toughest opponent you’ve faced on the field?

As a direct opposition at 13 I would have to say Tana Umaga I had an incredible amount of respect for him and he never disappointed on or off the field. If we are just talking about Hard Men then I still think Tim Rodber is the one, he was like tackling granite.

Who is the most talented player you’ve ever played alongside or against?

Tough call as I can reel off a few but James Simpson Daniel stands out as he didn't get to show it enough on an International stage.

What was the fixture you relished most as an England player?

England v Wales at the Millennium.

What was your favourite memory of being on tour with England?

The whole of the 2000 tour to South Africa as it probably was the last amateur tour!

If you hadn’t been involved with rugby, which sport would you have played?

Not sure I was ok at Athletics and now love golf, but if I'm honest I think Darts would have been my best shot.

Favourite sports star outside of rugby?

Hmm loving Anthony Joshua and Conor McGregor at the moment.

Best advice you’ve ever been given?

Not sure, I think it's a mixture of a few. I do believe that if you don't enjoy yourself in the sport you play you will never succeed at the highest level. If it ever feels like a job then you're in trouble.

Which players in the current England setup excite you the most?

I think Henry Slade has really stepped up obviously his injury means we won't get to see it this season. Elliott Daly is in great form, Jonny May was lightening in the World Cup. I think Josh Beaumont could do big things this year.

What is it about the hospitality in The Green Room that you most enjoy on Twickenham match days?

It’s a great venue and always has a fantastic atmosphere and everyone always has a ball.

What in your opinion are the benefits of using corporate hospitality as a business tool?

I think using Corporate Hospitality has many benefits. I always think it's good to take people out of the usual business environment and get to know them on a personal level.

I think from this you can really find out if you are going to work as a business relationship. There is also the chance that you will meet and make synergies with other companies there on the day, maybe a company you had previously not thought of.

Which fixture in the Old Mutual Wealth Autumn Internationals are you most looking forward to seeing?

Australia - mainly because the World Cup loss hurt so much and revenge would be nice. Also can Jones do a Cheika and turn England around in such a short time frame.

If you could only attend one (non-rugby event each year with the full hospitality experience, what would it be and why?

Been lucky to go to some great events but one I haven't done is the Super Bowl so it would be great to see 'the greatest show on earth'.

And finally… If you were stranded on a desert island, which three items would you take with you and why?

A shotgun as it would make hunting for food easier, sun block as my northern skin would struggle and a Bear Grylls survival book as surely it would help!
