Sporting stars make it to the New Year Honours list

2016 gave us a brilliant year of sporting achievements, including Britain’s success in Rio, and the celebrations continue for the world of sport as many of its greatest heroes have made their way to the New Year Honours list.

After success in Wimbledon and the Olympics Andy Murray finally reached the top spot of World Number 1. Murray can now add a knighthood to that list of achievements, received for services to tennis and his charity work.

Mo Farah has also received a knighthood following his triumph in Rio where he completed the “double double” by retaining his gold medal titles in the 5,000m and 10,000m. on receiving this honour Farah said “I'm so happy to be awarded this incredible honour from the country that has been my home since I moved here at the age of eight.”

Another Olympic hero Jessica Ennis-Hill, who famously won the gold medal in the heptathlon in London 2012 and got the silver four years later in Rio, has been given a damehood for services to athletics. Ennis-Hill, who is also a two-time world champion, has received the honour after announcing her retirement from the sport at the end of last year.

The Paralympian Lee Pearson CBE has been awarded a knighthood for his services to Equestrianism, Pearson, as one of the country’s most successful Paralympians, has taken part in five Paralympic games and won eleven gold medals.

‘Britain’s Golden Couple’ Jason and Laura Kenny have both been awarded a CBE, after the couple shot to fame in Rio when they were part of Team GB’s outstanding cycling team, between them the couple have won ten Olympic gold medals.
